What Exactly is a Paramedic?

Posted December 31st, 2010 in Info by admin

You may be completely stoked about becoming a paramedic (or even having that as an option in the near future), but you could be saying to yourself, “Ummm….what are they?”  Well, a paramedic is also known as a medic.  Otherwise known as a professional in the medical field.  They tend to work alongside other paramedics and EMTs (emergency medical technicians) within an EMS (emergency medical service) team.

The primary role of a paramedic is to provide advanced pre-hospital care while transferring patients to a nearby hospital.  Not known to many people, paramedics are not only located outside the hospital.  They are not limited to ambulances or other response vehicles.   You may sometimes find them in the hospital itself, tending to minor injuries and such.  And sometimes they will be stationed within the hospital until they get an emergency call.  In another article, we will discuss the many options of becoming a paramedic such as: military, private company, local EMS team, etc.

Although things are changing as training and knowledge of this profession change, people may still mistake calling paramedics ambulance drivers.  This is a common misconception because paramedics are not the only ones who may be driving the ambulance.  Anyone who belongs to the EMS team may be driving, but their are different roles within the EMS.  But we’ll get to that in a different post.

Paramedics are respected individuals within the community.  This is a needed profession.  Especially since the attacks on 9/11 have given rise to higher security, a greater need for medical personnel, and safety in general.  Alongside 9/11, there is another important reason for hiring more paramedics.  As of January 2011, the first baby boomers will be turning 65 and retiring.  As this happens, there will be a greater need for more medical professionals to assist in helping this vast group of people.  So if you’re thinking about becoming a paramedic, you are making a very valuable and needed choice.  You will be saving many lives in the near future.
