We’ll start with what I know you’re thinking about the most: a paramedic’s salary in California.  Isn’t that what we all want to know before we go any further?  But remember that these stats may be subject to change due to bargaining agreements, experience, training, and many other factors.  You are always welcome to ask for more money!  :)

Paramedic Salary Info

Average salary for a paramedic in California is $35,090. Although this doesn’t seem like much, EMTs and paramedics quite often are paid hourly and get quite a bit of overtime.  Not to mention the benefits (depending upon what company you are with).

On to the state requirements.

For every state you must first meet these requirements:

1.  Be at least 18 years of age
2.  Possess a high school diploma or GED
3.  Possess a current state-specific driver’s license

How to Become a Paramedic in the state of California:

1.  Successfully complete an approved paramedic training program;

(Please note: to be eligible to enroll in a paramedic training program, you must posses a current EMT or AEMT certificate or be currently registered as an EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).)

2.  You must pass both the written and practical examinations for the NREMT

3.  Submit fingerprints to the California Dept. of Justice

4.  Submit the Paramedic License Application

5.  Submit proof of citizenship (with documentation)

6.  Pay any fees that are applicable to the documentation (i.e. application, licensure)

3.  Complete the application and pay the fees associated.

The certification levels within the EMS (Emergency Medical Service) that you must pass through to  become a certified paramedic from beginning to end include (and the curriculum needed to obtain these certifications):

2.  EMT

3.  Advanced EMT

4.  Paramedic

All testing is done through computer testing since January 2007.  Pearson Vue allows you to locate a testing center in your area.
